If you’ve spent any time with me in person or on this podcast, you will know that I fully believe in the power of personal development. Many people in Christian circles have a few hesitations when it comes to personal development. Shouldn’t the Bible be sufficient for us? Are you worried about false teaching? These questions are valid, and in today’s episode, you are going to hear my loving response to these reservations. Instead, I think we need to focus our attention on a different question.
Why is it so important for us to spend time on personal development?
The number one reason is that God wants us to grow! When we spend time improving ourselves and growing, we proclaim so much glory and praise to the One who has given us the strength and intelligence. Personal development does not equal personal glory! Instead, we should keep foremost in our mind our Verse of the Week:
“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.”
Personal development will pave the way for the fruit of righteousness. When we invest in ourselves, we are also investing in the lives of the people around us and in God’s kingdom. I’ll be the first to confess that I need help in this. I need discernment from the Holy Spirit to know what teachers and schools of thought will be good for me. I need the Father to lead me to resources that will build me up in order to glorify His name.
That being said, I have distilled my guiding principles for Personal Development into three, easy steps. From there, I have gathered resources and tools that you can use to further your personal development journey. I know God has been working this in my heart for a while now. It is high time we get this journey started!
