One of the biggest reasons working moms pursue life balance is so that their children will have an enriching and fulfilling life. Especially as children get older, it can be more and more difficult to find the time and creative ways to connect with them. That is why I am so excited to have Joy Acaso back on the podcast this week! She is going to share with us her best tips for connecting deeply with our children.

about our guest

Joy Acaso is a Parent-Child Relationship Specialist.  She’s on a mission to help working moms navigate and strengthen their relationship with their children. Joy has learned the hard way that the key to helping children thrive lies in nurturing a meaningful connection with them. Although we have more knowledge and experience than our children, we are not the standard by which they should base their life; Jesus is. Joy wants to share ways in which we can help cultivate a strong relationship with their Creator in order to deepen our relationship together.

Joy is living a full and busy life, but she chooses to celebrate and be excited about the multitude of ways God has blessed her family. In this busy season, Joy finds time to get to know her kids. She puts herself in a posture of curiosity, asking questions that let kids know their opinions are valued. Strong communication has been the foundation of her approach to a deep connection. Instead of imposing her thoughts and feelings onto her kids, she allows them space to talk.

tips shared on the show

True connection has to begin with an act of trust. Joy points us to Isaiah 41:18 when we are tempted to try to control our kids, rather than listen to them:

“I will make rivers flow on barren heights,
    and springs within the valleys.
I will turn the desert into pools of water,
and the parched ground into springs.”

Is it always easy to trust God to open up opportunities? No, of course not! It takes time to intentionally build habits and routines into our busy lives. It certainly takes practice. Joy has several excellent ideas for parents who want to deepen their relationship with their kids.

Above all, Joy encourages busy parents to pray, watch, and be ready to listen whenever God gives them an opportunity to connect. By asking questions and listening intently, our children will slowly open up the door for a meaningful, personal connection.
